We fully appreciate that this can be a worrying period in your life. Urgent referrals, including patients with suspected cancer, are always seen within 2 weeks. If your GP does not feel that your referral is urgent you will be seen within 18 weeks听

What should I expect to happen during my first appointment?

You will first be seen and assessed by a member of the haematology medical team. They will then explain to you what they feel might be wrong with you, what further tests might be needed and when these will happen. Some simple tests may be done straight away. If a diagnosis has already been made they will explain this together with any necessary treatment and provide information leaflets or books or provide direction to appropriate websites. If you need to attend a follow-up appointment, you will be sent details of your next appointment in the post.听听

We are well aware that patients want answers to their problems as quickly as possible as uncertainty can be worrying. We try to turn things around rapidly but some tests take time to arrange and perform and we appreciate your understanding in this. Anybody whose health is at immediate risk may be admitted to the Pembroke Ward for initial treatment or to speed up investigations.听

We usually find it very helpful if you come with a member of your family or a friend who can sit in and be a second pair of ears for you. We often find that this also helps to allay any concerns they may have. Please be aware that, in order to provide a timely service, we may try to get several tests done in one day so you may in the hospital for a longer time than you expect.听

Somebody mentioned an 鈥楳DT鈥� meeting 鈥� what does that mean?

MDT stands for Multi-Disciplinary Team and this team includes all specialists who might contribute to your treatment if a new diagnosis of a significant blood disorder has been made. The MDT meets weekly and once your investigations are complete your consultant may refer your case to the MDT so that an agreed treatment plan can be made.听

What information will I get?

We don鈥檛 hide information from our patients but pride ourselves on an open relationship with our patients. All our research has shown that we possibly give too much rather than not enough information so please rely on us to help you in this regard. We will also give you the written information that you need to help you at each stage.听

We have a wide range of written information including general health information books about diet, financial arrangements etc. which we also have available and which you may find useful. If you require any more information, or do not understand anything we have told you please ask. Please remember that we keep in close contact with your GP and they may be able to give further information and support. We can also send you a copy of the letter we send to your doctor if you feel that would be helpful 鈥� just let the reception staff know. If you want to ask any specific questions, we suggest you note them down in advance听

If you need help with transport please discuss with reception staff when making appointments.听

The Pembroke Unit (Pembroke Ward & Suite)

The Pembroke Unit (Pembroke Unit (salisbury.nhs.uk)) comprises the Pembroke Ward and the Pembroke Suite.听听

It is a specialist unit for the investigation and treatment of patients who may have either blood conditions or cancer. Patients who have blood conditions or are undergoing chemotherapy, are seen in Haematology Outpatients and/or the day unit.听听

The aim of the Unit is to provide a rapid and efficient service in a supportive environment.听听

Getting to the Pembroke Ward

Pembroke Ward is primarily for Haematology patients who need to stay overnight for treatment rather than having treatment in the day unit or need admission to manage their health. It is along the hospital corridor on level 3 of the North hospital building.听听听

Pembroke Ward is a 10-bed ward with 3 bays that accommodates 2 patients at a time and four single side rooms with en-suite bathrooms.听听

Visiting Times - 14:00 - 20:00pm. Patients can have two visitors a day, but please call ahead to book your visiting slot.鈥�Please note you MUST have taken a negative Lateral Flow Test for COVID-19 prior to every visit.听

By car:听

Park in car park 8 and enter the hospital on level 2 near the Springs Restaurant. Head up the stairs or lift, to level 3 and go towards the Main Entrance. The Pembroke Ward is along the hospital corridor, very close to the Main Entrance 鈥� you can follow signs to find it.听

If you have a disabled badge there is disabled parking by the Main Entrance and also near the level 2 entrance by Springs Restaurant.听

By bus:鈥痩eave the bus at the Main Entrance bus stop, enter the hospital here. Go straight forward, at the end turn left along the main corridor to find The Pembroke Ward on your left.听

Getting to the Pembroke Suite/Day Unit

The Pembroke Suite, is where treatment for oncology patients is administered as an outpatient. Treatments include transfusions of blood and blood products, administration of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, target treatment, hormones).

It is staffed by nurses who specialise in the administration Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatments.

A range of support services are available for patients on the unit including advice from a dietician, hair specialist, aromatherapist, palliative care nurse, benefits advisor and psychologist.

The reception desk is shared with Oncology Outpatients and the receptionists can be contacted on ext. 4382.

The听Pembroke Suite听is located on level 3 at the main entrance to the hospital. They can be contacted on 01722 336262 (extension. 5075)

Visiting

There is a no visiting policy on Pembroke Suite.听 If you feel you need someone with you, please speak to the Nurse in Charge.听

By car:

If you park in car park 2, enter via the main entrance and take an immediate left (opposite Marks & Spencer), you will gain entrance through the door on the right, along the back wall.
If you park in car park 8, once you enter the hospital go to level 3 and go to the main entrance. Oncology Outpatients/Pembroke Suite will be on your right, opposite Marks and Spencer.听
If you have a disabled badge there is disabled parking by the main entrance and also near the level 2 entrance, opposite car park 8 by Springs Restaurant.

By bus:听leave the bus at the main entrance bus stop, enter the hospital here. Take an immediate left (opposite Marks & Spencer), you will gain entrance through the door on the right, along the back wall.

Getting to Pathology and Haematology Outpatients

Our Haematology Outpatient area is based within the Pathology Department at the hospital, they are along the hospital corridor on level 3 of the North building.

The direct telephone number for Pathology is 01722 336262 extension 4020.

Haematology Outpatients reception can be contacted on ext. 4020.

By car:

Park in car park 8 and enter the hospital on level 2 near the Springs Restaurant. Head up the stairs or lift, to level 3 and go towards the Main Entrance. Pathology is along the hospital corridor, very close to the main entrance 鈥� you can follow signs to find it.
If you have a disabled badge there is disabled parking by the Main Entrance and also near the level 2 entrance by Springs Restaurant.

By bus:听leave the bus at the Main Entrance bus stop, enter the hospital here. Go straight forward, at the end turn right on the main corridor to find the Pathology area on your left. This is also where you will find the blood test department reception.

Normally you will have a blood test before your appointment with a consultant so please arrive at Pathology at least 60 minutes before your appointment time.

Getting to the Nunton Day Unit

The Nunton Unit is an outpatient area, consisting of chairs where patients can have blood tests, have blood transfusions and other treatments.

The Nunton Nurse desk can be contacted on 01722 336262 (ext 4457).

By car:

Park in car park 8 and enter the hospital on level 2 near the Springs Restaurant. Turn right and continue to the end of the corridor. Nunton is located on the left just before the exit doors.
If you have a disabled badge there is disabled parking by the Main Entrance and also near the level 2 entrance by Springs Restaurant.

By bus:

Leave the bus at the Springs Entrance bus stop (second stop). Enter the hospital on level 2 near the Springs Restaurant. Turn right and continue to the end of the corridor. Nunton is located on the left just before the exit doors.

Mobile Care Unit

The Mobile Cancer Care Unit provides treatment for haematology and oncology patients away from the hospital site at scheduled locations. The unit is provided by the charity and is able to provide specific cancer treatment, blood tests, PICC line related appointments, collection of oral chemotherapy and more.

The unit is based at locations within Fordingbridge on a Tuesday, Gillingham on a Wednesday and Friday and Westbury on a Thursday. It is staffed by nurses who specialise in the administration of these treatments.
