Chest X-Ray

You will most likely have had a chest x-ray prior to coming to clinic. These take photos of the internal structures within the body to spot any inflammation, growths or abnormalities, in your lungs in this case. They can also detect infections including pneumonia or tuberculosis.

CT Scan

A CT (Computed Tomography) scan is carried out using a special x-ray machine which produces an image of a cross section, or 鈥榮lice鈥� of the body. The scanner consists of a 鈥榙oughnut-shaped鈥� structure about two feet thick, through which you pass whilst lying on a couch.

PET-CT Scan

A PET-CT scan combines a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan and a CT (Computed Tomography).

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and uses strong magnetic fields and gradients, coupled with radio waves, to generate cross-sectional pictures of various body parts.听

Bronchoscopy

A bronchoscopy is when an examination of your bronchial tubes is required. This means passing a flexible telescope from your nose or mouth down your windpipe and into the airways (bronchi).

An Electromagnetic Navigational Bronchoscopy (ENB) examines your lungs by using electromagnetic technology.

Bronchoscopy with EBUS (Endobronchial Ultrasound)

The EBUS uses a telescope which has a small ultrasound probe at its tip. This is passed gently through the mouth into the lungs to take samples from lymph glands.

A medical thoracoscopy uses a small telescope which is inserted into the pleural space in the lung, through a small skin incision over the ribs.

Lung Function Tests

These tests are designed to tell how well your lungs are working, which may be used to help decide if you are fit enough in order to have surgery or radiotherapy. They are simple tests and usually involve blowing in to a mouth piece so technicians can determine how much oxygen your lungs absorb and how much air you breathe in/out.
